Green Island Hammerhead Trip (Jan12) C 159.jpg
Shi Lang, Green Island - A huge pineapple sea cucumber, Thelenota ananas, trying to climb over a rock.

This particular individual was very large, probably almost a meter in length!
The perspective and wide angle lens used for this shot make this sea cucumber appear even bigger than it actually was. Just check out the 'tiny' diver in the background. He was only some 3 m behind the sea cucumber!
Pineapple sea cucumbers are large species that easily can reach over half a meter in length. The body is usually dark to black with orange conical papillae arranged in a star-like fashion. They are often found at the interface between reefs and sandy areas.
