Jellyfish Lake, Palau -- Snorkeler and jellyfish.
The JELLYFISH LAKE is a closed-off marine lake on Mecherchar Island that contains some 4-5 million golden jellyfish (Mastigias sp.). Being separated from their original marine environment for millenniums, the jellyfish have lost their stinging cells during evolution. The jellyfish migrate with the sun during the day as they live in symbiosis with some algae that rely on sunlight to produce sugars for them. Only Snorkeling is allowed in the 30m-deep lake.
