Mantis Shrimp - Kenting.jpg
Kenting, Taiwan -- Encounter with a mantis shrimp.

These colorful shrimp are rather large (up to 20 cm) and absolutely phenomenal animals.

Their eyes can be rotated by up to 180 degrees, and they are very fast swimmers.

Some species have mantis-like pincers, while others bludgeon their prey. They strike with an unbelievable speed and force! This striking movement was recently measured as the fastest movement in the animal kingdom - the attack is over in less than 1/20000 (in words: one twenty-thousandth!) of a second. Bludgeoning individuals have even been known to shatter the glass of aquarium tanks! WOW!
